La palabra del día

sótano: basement
As in, Fuimos al sótano para encender la electricidad.
Last night, during the second ever Smith-Juergens soup making extravaganza, our power left us. Darkness is no problem, maybe even a little romantic, but there is nothing romantic about ninety something degree weather with no air-conditioning.
Our landlord tried to explain to us over the phone how to flip the breaker (which we weren't even sure we had correctly identified) but I think our ineptitude quickly wore out his patience. He then told us there wouldn't be anyone on duty in our building for the rest of the weekend (awesome) and that if we still hadn't solved this problem he would come over tomorrow and help us out. Which left us alone in the hot hot darkness at least till morning.
While we sat on our living room floor eating turkey soup, Kate mentioned how the heat and the lack of power made it feel a lot like hurricane season in Florida and not at all like the day after Thanksgiving. So true. The southern hemisphere makes me homesick for the wrong time of year. At Christmas I will be sad that I'm not at the beach. We went to sleep with our screenless windows wide open, an all-you-can-eat buffet for the mosquitoes.
This morning Kate ran into our savior climbing the stairs. Fernando, whose father lives on the fifth floor, owns a company that gives bike tours of the city. He also happened to know exactly how to solve our problem and to have a key to the basement. He kindly went down and flipped the breaker for us. When that did absolutely nothing, he proceeded to dismantle our kitchen outlet with a screwdriver. The wall above the stove is now an unsightly, but happily functional mess of wires. And if anyone wants to take a bike tour of Buenos Aires, we know a guy.
I hope everyone in the northern hemisphere is enjoying their fall weather. I'm going to go make myself a turkey sandwich and eat it in front of the air conditioner.
